Visiting Scotland’s National Museum of Flight

Whenever I travel, I like to seek out local aviation museums. There are often some rare gems to be found. That was definitely the case during my recent trip to Scotland. The museum is located in East Fortune, a short drive from Edinburgh. Several of the museum’s buildings are rare surviving examples of World War 2-era hangars and facilities. The museum occupies only a portion of the former station. Other areas are home to a small civilian airport and an amateur race track. I saw plenty of activity in all three areas during my Sunday afternoon visit. I was particularly excited to visit NMF since it was to be my first aviation museum outside of the US. That alone ensured that I would find numerous aircraft that I’d never seen before.

I had the delight of being invited to a masked ball at this location, it is a beautiful location, the service was excellent, the only fly in the ointment was that they offered tap water or alcohol, I like sparkling water and they would not provide any,I was even asked if I had specially asked prior to the ball which I felt was unnecessary, it was a let down on an otherwise perfect evening.

For this reason we have also included information to help you reassure your child. Many of these resources have been developed in collaboration with South Lanarkshire Council. Even 2,year-old Egyptian mummies can rest undisturbed, now that X-rays and CT scans can see beneath their wrappings. For to unwrap a mummy is to destroy it. And the most exciting discovery of Fascinating Mummies, the first major show in the National Museum of Scotland’s splendidly refurbished galleries, is the speed at which non-invasive investigative techniques are developing.

Crucial evidence, such as the contents of a papyrus document wrapped within the bandaging of a preserved corpse, is likely to be readable before the year is out. A several-thousand-year-old guidebook to the underworld will see the light, and no particle will have been disturbed in the process.

Some of the most enigmatic human-made objects from Europe’s late Stone Age — intricately carved balls of stone, each about the size of a baseball — continue to baffle archaeologists more than years after they were first discovered. More than of the enigmatic objects have now been found, most of them in northeast Scotland, but also in the Orkney Islands, England, Ireland and one in Norway. Archaeologists still don’t know the original purpose or meaning of the Neolithic stone balls, which are recognized as some of the finest examples of Neolithic art found anywhere in the world.

But now, they’ve created virtual 3D models of the gorgeous balls, primarily to share with the public. In addition, the models have revealed some new details, including once-hidden patterns in the carvings on the balls. Hugo Anderson-Whymark, a curator at National Museums Scotland who created the online models, explained that many functions have been proposed for the stone balls over the years.

Such proposals have included the possibility that they were made as the stone heads for crushing weapons, or standardized weights for Neolithic traders, or rollers for the transport of the giant stones used in megalithic monuments. One theory is that the knobs on many of the carved stone balls were wound with twine or sinew, which allowed them to be thrown like slings or South American bolas.

Other theories describe the balls as objects of religious devotion or symbols of social status.
