More participants needed for Vancouver Public Library’s LGBT Read Dating event

Twenty-three years, to be exact. The project, which took four years to plan and roughly two to complete, brought back the team who designed the original library building and its closed to the public green roof : renowned Canadian architect Moshe Safdie and landscape designer Cornelia Oberlander who, even in her late nineties, is still going strong. Other foliage includes lavender and honeysuckle, and seating is provided via benches made from Brazilian walnut: a wood known for its resistance to rot essential in rainy Vancouver. While having a publicly-accessible rooftop was part of the initial Library Square concept dating back to the s, the scope of the project and cost overruns prevented the plan from making it to the design stage. Instead, levels eight and nine of the library were leased to the provincial government for 20 years, and when that lease expired in , the facility decided it was time to revisit the original plans. And most impressive of all, de Castell notes, the building managed to stay open throughout the process. We see about 5, visitors a day. So it was very important to us to stay open.

Because the VPL only started being able to track circulation numbers by title beginning in , the list they provided only covers borrowing that took place in the past 16 years.

The original English language title has been checked out a total of 10, times in the past decade and a half. The childhood classic was first published in and stars a very hungry caterpillar who eats his way through an apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries, five oranges, a lot of sweets and desserts before eating a green leaf, suffering a stomach ache and — finally!

The VPL has not been shy about capitalizing on the popularity of Harry Potter to draw people to the library. Over the summer, the VPL hosted a Harry Potter-themed escape room that booked out almost immediately, with more than adults and 40 teens participating over the course of the project. The library has frequently seen a bump in borrowing numbers for certain titles that are adapted to film or TV, such as Little Women which recently had another film adaptation premier in theatres.
